I have been crafting objects ever since I was a child, and creating ceramic objects feels like the most natural way to execute my artistic visions. Visually, I am drawn to the highly crafted and the uncanny. My inspirations include Classical and Hellenistic sculpture, contemporary ceramics, horror films, and fantasy video games. My formal attraction to studying naturalistic representation allows me to ground my sculptures in reality, and then push beyond into the surreal. While my works exist as physical objects in our natural world, I want them to appear to defy natural laws, and become otherworldly.
This body of work, Flesh and Fabric, is somewhat of a retrospective of what I have accomplished thus far in graduate school. Though the work explores a broad range of subject matters (physical-emotional responses to trauma, sexuality, queerness, death, spirituality, and the human condition), I have found that it is all united by these two visual themes (flesh and fabric). For me, this work has offered plentiful opportunities to explore myself and fulfill curiosities. So now, I simply want to share how creation can make permanent the fleeting ideas and experiences that come from living in this complex world.
